Museum Closed !
It is with great pain and sorry that we are forced to announce the formal and final closing of the Shore Line Railroad Historical Society's South Jersey Railroad Museum @Tuckahoe !
This closing comes after nearly 12 years of operations and interactions with the surrounding communities, as well as, most of the United States, Canada, South America and European visitors.
Let me say it has been a pleasure to serve as president of this fine organization since 2006 and prior to that, vice president.
The simple facts are, with the economy failing all over, our visitation numbers fell to a mere 3% of the normal over the past 24 months, and dwindling memberships and associates, we struggled to meet the operation costs.
The double financial catastrophies of our june 2009 and december 2009 train shows, failed to even cover costs of operations. Our hopes, of the December show, being our savior, with our largest show ever of 225 tables, we felt certain success was at hand. But this was not to be. The Friday of our December show started with one of the worst Nor'easter snow storms of the decade. With that said, and no one able to get to the show, our bottom line was now in the red.
We lost nearly $6,000 between the 2 shows with pre-paid ads, ect. and borrowed monies from our loyal members . We were faced with the reality of closing for 4 months, from November thru late March, and begun to do just that, while hoping for a much improved 2010 season. It was not to be, with the inability to keep the building heated, we began the shut down process to allow us to ride the winter out!, That was not to be either. We were flooded out by both rains and snow forcing Upper Twp to pull our lease. With this, the die was cast, we were to be no more !
We will leave this site up as long as possible , but it will be a view only site.
By the time of this posting, the museum will be emptied, our club in bankruptcy and dissolved permanently. We wish to thank all of our loyal patrons who made these nearly 12 years possible ! We ,one and all, will miss you and the museum dearly.
We will never forget you or the generosity given us. The Officers & Board of Directors March 01, 2010
